Anti-doping agencies should realize that their policies are weak

Lance Armstrong was denying doping for years. However he was accused of taking prohibited medications many times, he continued to claim that he never administered forbidden medicines. Even when the USADA proved that the cyclist doped, he cheated about doping. But ultimately, Lance Armstrong decided to admit to taking EPO, testosterone and blood transfusions.
Although a lot of sportspersons used performance-enhancing drugs and avoided detection successfully, there was anything unusual in the doping case of Lance Armstrong. Lance Armstrong reached great success in sports. He won 7 Tour de France titles. He obtained also some other awards. Lance Armstrong got worldwide success. Although he submitted to a lot of drug tests, he never tested positive for any banned product.
Of course, Lance Armstrong is not the only sportsperson who has doped. Sportspersons have taken forbidden medicines during past years. They continue to administer steroids and other related preparations nowadays. And professional athletes will administer them in future. Administration of steroids and other doping products is spread in professional sports. Almost each athlete takes forbidden products. While several sportspersons test positive for prohibited medicines and receive suspensions, others are not caught.
When it comes to the attitude towards Lance Armstrong’s doping, it’s mainly negative. A lot of individuals got great anger, when the well-known cyclist admitted to using EPO, the steroid testosterone and blood transfusions. A lot of persons believed in him. They thought that Lance Armstrong competed “cleanly”. That’s why their disappointment was significant.
And what is about “clean” sports? Anti-doping agencies should ponder over this issue. While anti-doping officers state that they have sophisticated tests to combat doping in sports, many sportspersons apply steroids and/or other related products and remain undetectable.
While the legendary cyclist has admitted to applying forbidden preparations, anti-doping agencies should realize that their programs are inappropriate.

Lance Armstrong is just one of athletes that have avoided detection while using steroids

Przemyslaw Saleta’s attitude to Lance Armstrong’s steroid use differs from that of thousands individuals. The polish boxer doesn’t condemn the American cyclist. Przemyslaw Saleta notices that Lance Armstrong has acted like almost each professional sportsperson. The 7-time Tour de France winner has used forbidden drugs and cheated about his doping. It’s not surprising. Almost each sportsperson takes steroids and other related medications.
While many athletes that apply forbidden medications are caught by anti-doping officers and sentenced to bans, Lance Armstrong has never tested positive for any prohibited medicine. He could avoid detection, despites of having been subjected to numerous drug tests. Of course, It goes without saying that Lance Armstrong is not the only athlete that has avoided detection successfully. Let take Chinese sportspersons as an example! They are sponsored by the state. The state provides money enough to acquire such drugs that are undetectable. Thus, numerous Chinese athletes administer doping products without being detected. It becomes evident that athletes that have much money may take performance-enhancing drugs and remain undetectable. Lance Armstrong tuned out to be just one of such athletes.
Przemyslaw Saleta has an uncommon proposal. He believes that steroids and other related preparations should be legalized in professional sports. According to this sportsman, steroids and other doping products are not dangerous for health, if they are applied by adults that possess sufficient knowledge about ways to consume them appropriately. Przemyslaw Saleta thinks that application of anabolic steroids and other related preparations by sportspersons should be monitored by doctors. Thus, athletes are likely to avoid serious undesirable reactions.
Furthermore, Przemyslaw Saleta considers that anabolic steroids and other related products are indispensible in such sports, as cycling. Cycling is a sport where sportspersons should endure very extreme conditions while training and competing. Thus, steroids and other related products help cyclists to maintain health in better conditions. Cycling in itself is dangerous without steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs.
But Przemyslaw Saleta specifies that anabolic steroids and other related medications should be forbidden in amateur sports. Moreover, young athletes must not be also permitted to use these medicines because they may cause serious harm in them. Teenagers must not take such products because they may suffer from serious side results.
Nevertheless, Przemyslaw Saleta notes that it is wrong to think that steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs represent the key to success. According to him, success is a result of hard working.

Harsh penalties should be for illegal actions of pharmacies

Numerous pharmaceutical companies violate laws. But only some of them are punished appropriately. Numerous pharmaceutical companies avoid harsh penalties successfully. But just when serious scandals are caused by illegal actions of pharmaceutical companies, they are sentenced to proper penalties. For example, anyone is aware of the meningitis outbreak which has spread across the country because of contaminated steroids manufactured by a Massachusetts compounding center. Undoubtedly, owners and officials of the company will be sanctioned harshly. But when illicit actions of drug manufacturers don’t result in such serious troubles, they go on with their business successfully.
The media reports about illicit actions connected with steroids, painkillers and other prescription medicines daily. But you may see that compounding pharmacies get only light sentencing for illicit distribution of steroids and other doping products. So, athletes and bodybuilders have free access to performance-enhancing drugs. They purchase anabolic-androgenic steroids and other related drugs from compounding pharmacies and apply them for athletic goals. Moreover, certain pharmaceutical companies provide fake prescriptions for anabolic-androgenic steroids. Corrupt doctors supply customers of compounding pharmacies with prescriptions which are given without needed evaluation of customers’ individual conditions.
Pharmaceutical companies are responsible not only for illicit sale of anabolic-androgenic steroids. Some compounding pharmacies manufacture preparations in unsterile conditions. As a result, thousands individuals get tainted medications and experience severe complications, applying  these preparations. Certain individuals even die from contamination resulted from administration of contaminated preparations. As you are probably informed, 39 persons died because of fungal meningitis caused by contaminated methylprednisolone acetate injections.
The late contamination with fungal meningitis should influence on decisions of proper authorities. Criminal penalties should take place. Otherwise, health of numerous individuals is in a serious danger. Prescription preparations must be sold only under real prescriptions. All medications must be manufactured in sterile conditions. If drug manufacturers don’t obey all laws, they must be punished. They must not be allowed to continue with business, if they violate laws. Forfeiture of licenses should be accompanied by other serious sanctions.

Whoopi Goldberg and Bob Weiner discuss Lance Armstrong’s testicular cancer

Although the ashamed American cyclist Lance Armstrong has been already stripped of his 7 Tour de France titles and other awards, his steroid scandal is still widely disputed. A lot of persons are still expressing their thoughts linked with this case. Not only his alleged usage of doping products is discussed but certain individuals also argue about Lance Armstrong’s testicular cancer. Why has Lance Armstrong experienced this disease in his young years? What has caused this health problem in him?
Whoopi Goldberg, a celebrated American actress is also implicated in debates connected with Lance Armstrong’s steroid scandal. While she has been mainly implicated in discussions connected with marijuana and other related drugs, now she has chosen to join those that fight against steroids and other related medicines.
According to Whoopi Goldberg, Lance Armstrong has experienced testicular cancer because of anabolic steroids. The actress thinks that anabolic-androgenic steroids are likely to result in cancer. She believes that these medicines may promote appearing and developing cancer. Whoopi Goldberg thinks that experts should inform people about potential connections between anabolic steroids and cancer. The actress notices that specialists can define whether Lance Armstrong has developed cancer because of steroids.
But what do other famous individuals think about Lance Armstrong’s testicular cancer? Bob Weiner, a well-known political commentator, notices that anyone should be very careful while suggesting that anabolic steroids are responsible for development of cancer. This person acknowledges that these drugs  are blamed for numerous side reactions which are quite harmful for consumers’ health and even life. But he adds that it is uncommon to blame anabolic steroids for cancer. Such suppositions are serious. Bob Weiner considers that this issue has nothing to do with anti-doping morality.
Nevertheless, Bob Weiner is ready to believe that Lance Armstrong’s testicular cancer has been caused by anabolic steroids. This illness usually doesn’t occur in young males. Why then has Lance Armstrong got it? Since scientific literature suggests that connections between cancer and steroid abuse may exist, Bob Weiner doesn’t deny affirmations of Whoopi Goldberg.
But as it has been already mentioned, this issue doesn’t belong to those of anti-doping programs. Anti-doping officials focus on morality and they don’t care about protection of sportspersons’ health.

Previous contaminations caused by drugs produced at NECC

In 2003 the FDA had in mind to close the New England Compounding Center (NECC) which lately caused the meningitis outbreak in several states of America. The company produced tainted Methylprednisolone Acetate injections. More than 400 persons who used the tainted steroid injections got fungal meningitis. This illness turned out to be tragic for 39 individuals.
According to a recent report released by the House of Energy and Commerce Committee, the meningitis outbreak could have been prevented. The report revealed many cases connected with the NECC that should have been closed by the FDA earlier.
The FDA claimed in 2003 that the Massachusetts pharmacy should not have produced medicines till improving of the situation. But finally the FDA didn’t ban manufacture of preparations at the NECC. Since the NECC was considered to be a pharmacy, it should have been ruled by Massachusetts officials. So, the FDA let Massachusetts colleagues to resolve the problem. As for Massachusetts officials, they didn’t ban manufacture of preparations at once. The NECC continued to manufacture drugs. Just Barry Cadden, the owner of the NECC, received reprimand.
Moreover, the NECC was accused of certain illegal actions. The company acted inappropriately under its license. Being a pharmacy, the NECC acted as a manufacturer and sent thousands dosages of medicines to hospitals and individual patients.
In 2002 certain individuals got unusual adverse results after they had used bethamethasone injections manufactured by the Massachusetts pharmacy.
Later some individuals who received methylprednisolone acetate injections produced by the Massachusetts pharmacy were contaminated with bacterial meningitis. Since these persons received complete recovery because of treatment with antibiotics, the case was forgotten. The Massachusetts company was not punished for the tainted medicines.
These and even certain other cases display that the NECC should have punished earlier. The Compounding Center should have been closed for its illicit and inappropriate actions. But the Massachusetts pharmacy was never sentenced to any severe penalties. As a result, the company continued to produce medications which were dangerous for consumers’ health. Finally, the meningitis outbreak caused by tainted injections of the Massachusetts pharmacy spread to some states and sickened a lot of individuals. If the company had been closed earlier, the contamination with deadly fungal meningitis would not have taken place.

Competence of Tennessee health officials is undisputed

The meningitis outbreak caused by contaminated steroid injections could have been prevented. But since the FDA didn’t utilize its authority for this purpose properly, more than 500 individuals were contaminated with this disease and 39 recipients of the injections died.
Tennessee officials showed unbelievable competence under these circumstances. They were praised by legislators for their decisive actions.
It was announced that many individuals who had received steroid injections produced by the NECC experienced complications. When Tennessee health officials found out about this situation, they enforced all health facilities to stop utilizing drugs produced by the compounding pharmacy from Massachusetts. Furthermore, they informed immediately about contamination health officials of other states. Actions of Tennessee health officials were rapid and decisive. They acted with no doubts and did everything in order to prevent further contamination and improve conditions of those that sickened.
If Tennessee health officials hadn’t acted so rapidly and competently, more individuals would have been contaminated with fungal meningitis and more deaths would have occurred.
When it comes to the FDA, it showed incompetence. It didn’t use its authority definitely in order to improve the situation. Then it tried to justify its incompetence, claiming that its power was not cleared and established enough to interfere in such large-scale compounding centers, as the NECC. But legislators didn’t accept the FDA’s excuse.
Tennessee health officials deserve to get a gold medal for their efforts.
However several individuals consider that they could avoid contamination, warnings about risks still exist. Numerous persons are still hospitalized. Others are contracted by health officials. If any negative effects occur at injection sites of those that have used the contaminated steroids, they must inform health care providers immediately.

FDA found source of contamination with meningitis at NECC

It is widely reported about the meningitis outbreak which has happened in certain states of America. Contaminated Methylprednisolone Acetate injections led to fungal meningitis in over 500 patients. The contamination turned out to be fatal for 39 patients: they died. The majority of deaths occurred in Tennessee.
It was said that contaminated steroid injections had been manufactured by the New England Compounding Center (NECC) that is based in Massachusetts. The FDA tested the company in order to define what led to contamination and see the situation at the NECC. It was affirmed by the FDA that the contaminated steroid injections were indeed produced by this compounding pharmacy.
According to the Associated Press, the FDA reported that it was evident that manufacture of drugs was unsterile at the NECC. The FDA said that leaking water and uncontrolled temperature were only certain problems at the pharmacy. The equipment used for preparing of solution for injections was unsterile.
Moreover, the FDA stated that there were some other contaminants. Some bacterial contaminants were found at the compounding center. However these contaminants were not real pathogens, they were capable to cause infection too. These bacterial contaminants were found in such drugs, as Betamethasone and Triamcinolone. There were not any cases reported about contamination resulted from application of these preparations. But it was noticed that these drugs could also cause contamination. However the bacterial contaminants presented anywhere in the environment, they had not to be in drugs. This fact pointed at unsterile conditions at the compounding center and affirmed that the Methylprednisolone Acetate injections turned out to be contaminated with fungal meningitis because they were manufactured in improper conditions.
The situation made it clear that new rules on compounding pharmacies should be established. Contamination should be prevented. Otherwise, public health is in danger in the USA.

Barry Larkin expresses negative attitude to steroid users

The retired baseball player Barry Larkin claims about his negative attitude towards athletes that have ever taken steroids and/or other forbidden medicines. He considers that such baseball players who have ever been linked to doping products must not be in the Baseball Hall of Fame. To be in the Hall of Fame is the highest honor that is gotten by baseball players. Barry Larkin has been elected for the Hall of Fame last year. He considers that dopers should not get the highest honor. They should see that they have made a serious mistake, when they have decided to use anabolic steroids and/or other related medicines. Their decision points that they should be out of this club forever.
Barry Larkin belongs to the most successful baseball players. He has gotten several awards, while playing professional baseball.
Barry Larkin also notices about Pete Rose who is kept out of the Baseball Hall of Fame. This athlete has gambled on baseball games. That’s why he has been suspended from professional baseball for the entire life. So, he doesn’t have any possibility to be introduced to the Hall of Fame. Barry Larkin claims that those that have ever applied prohibited medicines should get similar sanction. They must not be in the Hall of Fame.
Barry Larkin has played during the steroid era. He doesn’t intend to demonize those that have played with and against him. He doesn’t make rash conclusions about other baseball players. Barry Larkin underlines that no any athlete should be punished, if his guilt has not been proven. He is considered to be innocent until it will be evident that he has actually taken anabolic steroids and/or other related products.
Barry Larkin also takes part in educating young athletes about risks related to application of steroids. He has established a charity foundation that has been called after his name. Thus, the former successful baseball player puts substantial efforts in order to make baseball clean. He urges young people not to use steroids and other doping products. Barry Larkin desires to see baseball drug-free.

FDA: ambiguity causes problems in regulation linked with pharmacies

The fungal meningitis outbreak which began in September 2012 had serious impact on America. Contaminated injectable steroids were produced by the New England Compounding Center (located in Massachusetts) and given to numerous persons. As a result, over 400 patients sickened with fungal meningitis in more than 20 states. 39 persons contaminated with this disease died. 14 deaths occurred in Tennessee.
It became obvious that it needed to do something for prevention of such cases. Contamination must not take place in future. The FDA had to meet with representatives of all states for discussion of this situation. Thus, recently a conference took place in order to prevent occurring contamination in the future.
It was affirmed during the meeting that new laws on compounding centers should be implemented.
Representatives of certain states claimed that they did proper job in their states and no any individual experienced troubles connected with contamination. Furthermore, they underlined with criticism that they didn’t know what occurred in other states.
As for the FDA, its authority over such situations is not established properly. Federal court cases that were during past years depressed the authority of the FDA evidentially. Furthermore, several laws seem to be unclear.
Margaret Hamburg, the FDA Commissioner, proposed to improve the situation through the following changes:
- to improve training of state regulators;
- to induce sharing information between the FDA and states;
- to remove ambiguity from laws.

These items seem to be rational. Such changes must help to induce improving public health of Americans. It goes without saying that if rules contain ambiguity, no any agreement will be reached. That’s why new laws should be elaborated and existing rules should be altered.
The FDA hopes that state regulators will coact with it in order to prevent producing and shipping contaminated preparations.

What will you remember about Lance Armstrong?

Another year has gone away. Thinking about 2012, what will you remember about sports? Which names will you pronounce? Will you note about great baseball players? Will you notice about the ashamed American cyclist Lance Armstrong? Will you talk about the Summer Olympics? Will you discuss concussions of football players? Will you say about suicides committed by several professional football players? What will you note about Melky Cabrera?
Of course, everyone will remember the case linked with Lance Armstrong while speaking about sports of 2012. Each individual will mention about the role of steroids in cycling and in other sports. Any individual will mention about possible adverse consequences of steroids applied for muscle and strength gains. Any individual interested in sports will remember what reporters have stated about steroids, lying in sports and certain ways of athletes to succeed in professional sports.
Thinking about sports of 2012, you will probably comment the steroid era in baseball and integrity of this sport. You will also notice about dreadful deeds of Jerry Sandusky and his coaching career at Penn State.
But let think what future generations will remember. What will historians remark one hundred years later? Will they concentrate on stories related to James LeBron, Melky Cabrera and Jerry Sandusky? Will they talk over concussions of professional football players? Although they will probably remember these cases, the most heat debates will be connected with Lance Armstrong’s steroid scandal. This is a case which will be never forgotten. Many individuals will remember achievements of Lance Armstrong in cycling and his further downfall. Of course, they will also notice about his foundation Livestrong and impact of his disgraced reputation upon the charity organization. They will remember that intake of anabolic steroids resulted in loss of Tour de France titles, distancing from the foundation Livestrong and certain other troubles. The legendary cyclist will be ever in the memory of the American society.

Voting for Baseball Hall of Fame is unfair

Fans of baseball and many other persons seem to be anxious by results of voting for the Hall of Fame. Certain great players have not been elected for the Baseball Hall of Fame. It is not surprisingly that you also ask why they have not been supported. Under guidelines of voting, those that have shown brilliant baseball skills and contributed to their teams evidentially should be elected. It goes without saying that such baseball players, as Roger Clemens, Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, Rafael Palmeiro, Mark McGwire and certain other individuals have demonstrated great abilities and accomplishments while playing professionally. Why aren’t they elected for the Baseball Hall of Fame?
A lot of voters claim that they will never support those that have ever been related to anabolic steroids and/or other related products. Dopers should be punished. Future generations should understand that they will never really succeed, if they administer doping products.
What would you do, if you were a member of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America? Would you support steroid users?
In fact, voters never possess full information about admitted and suspected steroid users. You can’t prove that Roger Clemens has really administered performance-enhancing drugs. Numerous persons have suspicions but there is no any proof. How may voters refuse to support him? Are they sure that he has applied anabolic steroids and other forbidden medications? –No, they aren’t. That’s why it is unfair to keep Roger Clemens out of the Baseball Hall of Fame just because of suspicions.
While some voters are ready to support suspected steroid users, they say that they will never vote for an admitted consumer of steroids. Although it seems to be fair, let analyze the situation better! Have steroids played any significant role in success of certain baseball player? For example, if even Roger Clemens has taken doping products, it is possible to convince anyone that he has had great success not because of steroid use. Great accomplishment of this prominent baseball player have been manifested before his alleged usage of steroids. According to certain affirmations, Roger Clemens has administered steroids since 1998 and then in 2000 and 2001.  But the most brilliant achievements have been done by him before 1998. Thus, nobody can state that steroids have helped Roger Clemens to succeed in professional baseball. That’s why he should be elected for the Hall of Fame.
Furthermore, why are many individuals inclined to demonize just dopers? Isn’t it the society that presses sportspeople to start using anabolic steroids and other related products?

Why aren’t consumers of steroids allowed to be in Hall of Fame?

Several members of the Baseball Hall of Fame think that users of steroids must never be in their club. They asssert that such baseball players, as Sammy Sosa, Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens don’t deserve to be in the Baseball Hall of Fame. They are very pleased that these persons didn’t get needed percentage of voting to be in the Hall of Fame. According to them, it is fair. They allege that otherwise our children will be in confusion. They will suggest that they are allowed to use anabolic steroids and whatever they desire and remain unpunished. So, it would be a bad example for future generations. Al Kaline, Goose Gossage and certain others that belong to the Baseball Hall of Fame have this point of view. They even point at cycling, as a good example to follow.
What occurred actually in the world of cycling? The successful American cyclist was accused of applying forbidden medications. As a result, he was deprived of his 7 Tour de France titles and sentenced to life-time ban.
So, certain Hall of Famers say that cycling is a good example for baseball. Baseball players that are found guilty of doping should be banned from this sport entirely. Record books must not include information about success of those that have been caught using prohibited substances. Those that have cheated should be punished appropriately.
Nevertheless, not each member of the Baseball Hall of Fame has similar point of view. For example, Juan Marichal supports Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, Mark McGwire, Roger Clemens, etc. He notes that these baseball players should be elected for the Hall of Fame. These players are stars in baseball. No one could prove that they have actually taken performance-enhancing drugs. Since there is no any proof, suspicions mean nothing.
Under rules related to voting for the Hall of Fame, baseball players that have amazing abilities and those that have contributed to their teams substantially should be elected for the Hall of Fame.  No one doubts that Sammy Sosa, Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens were great players. They made evident contributions to their teams. That’s why they should be elected for the Hall of Fame.

What helped Manuel Marquez to add muscles?

Each fan saw that the body of the American boxer Juan Manuel Marquez had been altered significantly. What led to such evident changes in the sportsperson?
Since Juan Manuel Marquez is linked to the admitted steroid dealer Angel “Memo” Hernandez, a lot of individuals think that the boxer’s muscles have been enhanced because of steroids and/or other doping products. Angel “Memo” Hernandez is the strength coach of Juan Manuel Marquez. This individual was related to the BALCO scandal. As it was learnt, this man supplied many top sportspersons with anabolic steroids and other doping products. He presented information about several athletes that bought banned medicines from him.
Learning that Angel “Memo” Hernandez has been a distributor of steroids, a lot of persons think that he provides doping products to Juan Manuel Marquez. Certain suspicions and even accusations were pronounced by Freddie Roach, Manny Pacquiao’s trainer. Freddie Roach claimed that it would be well to subject the both boxers Juan Manuel Marquez and Manny Pacquiao to drug testing before the ring.
Actually, Freddie Roach’s suspicions were not based on any drug evidence. He focused only on increased muscles of Juan Manuel Marquez.
Later Freddie Roach said that he didn’t mean anything serious. He affirmed that he was just joking.
Angel “Memo” Hernandez said that he was not just a coach. Since he is a scientist, he possesses great knowledge. He knows the best ways to acquire muscle mass and add strength. Angel “Memo” Hernandez notices that he knows the methods to do it legally. No any illegal drug is included in his methods. But he refuses to reveal his methods. The coach says that this is a secret.
As for Juan Manuel Marquez, he affirmed that he never administered any banned medicine. He noted that it was not drugs which caused the significant changes in his physique. Moreover, he specified that weight was not the main factor while fighting. According to Juan Manuel Marquez, a fighter should possess intelligence, speed and strength in order to have success.
Neither Juan Manuel Marquez, nor Manny Pacquiao was subjected to testing for banned medications before the fight. Such tests are commonly applied by the Nevada State Athletic Commission after matches.
